55 YEARS IN CORNISH FARMING
‘The food of kings’ – Cornish Tregassow Asparagus
John and Jennie Keeler are legendary for producing delicious
Cornish Tregassow asparagus during the season, which lasts between seven to eight weeks every year. Their farming story over 55 years
has been bittersweet at times,
full of challenges but with many amazing moments.
Today the Keelers are considered the elite producers
of asparagus in Cornwall, which is grown on their picturesque 400-acre farm, just a few miles from Truro. Jennie Keeler, with her
enthousiasm and sense of fun, worked in London as a props girl at Studio Vanessa, in Glebe Place in the heyday of London’s
photographic age. She managed three big studios with celebrity photographers like David Bailey popping in and out while she fluffed
and puffed the future stars of the 1960s. So nothing could have been more of a shock than arriving at Tregassow Manor in 1961, which
she describes as more foreboding than a scene out of Wuthering Heights. Jennie was 20 and totally unprepared for life as a farmer’s
wife and would in truth have swapped Tregassow Farm’s then two hundred and fifty acres for a flat in Chelsea with a window box.
